Chosing My Future Self - A Mindfulness Technique

A helpful mindfulness model that has enabled my slow and steady rebound from the depths of covid comfort eating and a weight gain of roughly 25lbs has been re-building the skill to "choose myself" or, better said, choose the future version I am working towards.

My future self is the version that I am continuously aspiring to be -the health prioritizing, self-accepting, ambitious, kind, open-minded, curious, and joyous version of myself. The version I am intentionally building through consistent habits.

These attributes are all present and evolving aspects of who I am and each is amplified when I prioritize activities and choices that build them.

How do I do build them?

First, I invest time in building my mindfulness muscle. The spark of meta-awareness allows me to observe my thoughts in the moment and take time to reflect before making a choice.

This is enabled by creating awareness habits like journaling and meditation. These are most effective when scheduled. Spaced repetition helps (more on that in another thread).

Second, in the moments of mindful choice I pose a question:

Do I want to choose the pleasure of this moment or do I choose the future version of myself?

I know that if over time I choose my future self 80% or more of the time I will continue to advance towards my objectives.

Satisfyingly, this model enhances my ability build habits & is self-reinforcing - small wins enable progression. To measure my progress I use: roam journaling, Withings trackers, Apple health, a CGM, my trainer assessing my performance at the gym. Pro Tip: Telemetry helps...

When I do choose the moment, I enjoy the indulgence with intention - think of a donut or an evening of binge-watching. Guilt and self-recrimination are largely avoided.

What works for you?
